Understanding Hyperpigmentation: Causes, Treatments, and Prevention
Hey Lush Ladies!
This month, as fall approaches, we’re diving into a common skin concern: hyperpigmentation. Whether you're dealing with dark spots, melasma, or post-inflammatory pigmentation, understanding this condition is the first step towards brighter, more even-toned skin.
What is Hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation occurs when areas of your skin produce excess melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. This results in darker patches or spots on the skin, which can vary in size and color. Common types include:
Sunspots: Also known as age spots, these are typically found on areas frequently exposed to the sun, like your face and hands.
Melasma: Often triggered by hormonal changes, melasma appears as dark patches, usually on the face.
Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): This type appears after an injury or inflammation to the skin, such as acne or eczema.
Causes of Hyperpigmentation
Sun Exposure: Ultraviolet (UV) rays stimulate melanin production, leading to sunspots and freckles.
Hormonal Changes: Fluctuations, especially during pregnancy or due to contraceptive use, can cause melasma.
Skin Inflammation: Injuries, acne, or eczema can leave dark spots as the skin heals.
Medications: Some drugs can cause pigmentation changes as a side effect.
Effective Treatments
There are several approaches to treating hyperpigmentation, depending on its type and severity, many of which we can help with at Lush!!
Topical Treatments: Ingredients like Vitamin C, hydroquinone, and retinoids can help lighten dark spots. Prescription creams may be necessary for more stubborn cases.
Chemical Peels: These treatments exfoliate the top layer of skin, reducing pigmentation and revealing a more even tone. (Try one of our Perfect Derma, PCA peels, or zo peels at Lush!)
Laser Therapy: Lasers can target and break down melanin deposits, helping to even out skin tone. (Our LaseMD Ultra is AHHMAZING for lightening pigmentation!)
Microdermabrasion: This procedure exfoliates the skin, reducing the appearance of dark spots and promoting new skin growth. (This is incorporated into our Hydrofacials which are great for also infusing brightening ingredients into the skin!)
Prevention is key! Start with a tinted spf of 30 or higher, and hats/ visors/ sunglasses
